3 weeks

The puppies are altering every day now, definitely interacting with one another. Their voices are developing and I am sure they hear when I make encouraging noises. Yesterday, Thursday, we opened up their whelping area and put down the plastic putting newspaper on the top and bless them they are already moving off their bed to wee and poo. Cassie has continued to feed them well but she is happier to leave them to get some valuable “me time”. The hair on her  tummy is getting thin now where the Munchkins’ paws kneed her udder to encourage the flow of milk. At this stage I like to encourage the babies to lap some evaporated milk mixed with warm water. Needless to say they took to the task like ducks to water. Most of them ended up paddling or sitting in it but never the less they loved it. The same cannot be said about the cleaning process afterwards. They were all in need of a wipe down to remove the sticky milk and they were then put under their heat lamp to dry off. I am sure in another few days they can be introduced to their Burns puppy food.

Enjoy the pictures and footage.

2 weeks

What a difference a week makes, weather back to cold and windy, we were really spoilt over Easter. The pups and Cassie continue to thrive. They have their eyes open now and are taking their first wobbly steps, plus we have heard a couple of proper “woofs”. I am sure  families will be pleased to hear visiting hours are available . We will limit visits to one family in any day, Cassie still has a mammoth task feeding the hungry munchkins. Do get in touch to arrange a visit.

Worming has taken place this morning for the first time, they have a dose for 3 consecutive days so 2 more to go. Their weight is increasing steadily and Cassie has plenty of milk. She is eating 5 meals a day plus snacks of chicken wings. The demands of her hungry family will continue to increase as they get stronger and bigger, so as soon as the pups are able to we will start them on evaporated milk to help supplement their rations from Mum. I think we will start this week if they continue to grow as they are. I was intending to put up some video footage but the camera battery was flat so will do as soon as possible .

Betty my car is at the hospital with  broken power steering, so that will be expensive ,blooming cars.

I am planning on going to WELKS to see everyone ,but I will be dog less. I shall enjoy munching Jas and Cassie’s offspring ,while Chris stays home on puppy duty.

Plans for my open day are coming together, agility equipment is being made and ordered. Chris is making the contact equipment such as walkways and see-saws. The non slip rubberised paint has arrived so I am hoping for some decent weather to paint it. Tunnel and jumps are due to arrive this week.

The following photos are of each individual pup

Happy Easter

P20150403_12uppies are doing really well, they have had their first weigh in since birth and have all gained weight. They have alos had their sharp little nails clipped. This is much appreciated by Cassie. Cassie is happy to have a mooch down the field now, we put the munchkins heat lamp on and they are perfectly happy. We are still getting up at 2.30 am to feed Cassie ,Chris and I do alternate nights, she goes out for a wee then has her egg and evaporated milk, which she loves. This probably isn’t necessary with this size litter but it seems a small thing that we can do for her. She did have a day or two when she wasn’t eating as well as I would have liked, but that didn’t last long and now she is ravenous ! I expect their eyes to start to open in the next day or two, they are already much more active and move around the whelping box, dragging their fat tummy’s 🙂

20150403_13 20150404_11

The weather has been beautiful here we have been tidying the garden borders and planting seeds for my veg in the green house. This time last year I was in hospital having had my hip replaced, how time flies.

I am sad to say I have resigned from the LM club committee , I have so much going on this year with starting agility training I just cannot commit to anything else at the moment. I would be happy to do another stint in a few years, when life returns to normal !

We are having an Open Day , “Have-a-Go” day on Sunday May 3rd. Its free, lots going on, various demos, and doggie trade stalls and an opportunity to try a few agility obstacles. And of course the puppies will be making a guest appearance. If anyone is near enough and would like to come it would be lovely to see you and your pooches, Munster or not !

4 Days Old

20150329_08Cassie and her family are doing well, she is such a lovely mum. At this moment in time she looks really well and had enough energy today to chase pheasants down the field. They will have a “weigh in” on Friday and I will report their progress, but they have really grown. I struggle to imagine them all in her tummy now. Badger’s name has changed now to Mac because he has an Apple Mac logo on his back, obvious to see on the photos.

Enjoy !

Crumpsbrook Babies Day 1

20150328_01Wednesday morning I took Cassie’s temperature and it had dropped, this has been a good signal for me over the years, but this was a few days early. By lunchtime she was panting and pacing up and down. I knew things were immanent. The first puppy, a girl, arrived just after 3.00pm ,very civilised. All our puppies have names given to them in theory to ease identification, but some are quite convoluted but its fun. So the first girl we called Penni, she has a peninsula shaped mark on her left side! Cassie then kept us waiting over 3 hours for the next, she was very relaxed and happy with no contractions but I had to keep telling myself she was fine. Just as I had asked Chris to sort things for carrying puppies and keeping them warm  in the car for a journey to the vets, the next lot of contractions started. This puppy was a boy and huge and needed a big effort from Cassie and a little help from me, guess what he is now called Hugo. Ten minutes later number 3 arrived, probably all the heaving for Hugo had pushed this one into position. This was a girl, she has a grey nose so we called her Shadow. Another 3 hour wait (this is so stressful!) before number 4 arrived. It was just after 10.00 pm by now, a boy so like his Dad his name is Dexter. Badger was number 5 one hour later, not rocket science to guess why he has his name. Girl number 3 then. She is called Kite, again self explanatory, she has a small kite mark (so she definitely meets the required standard!) on her side. We are now well into the middle of the night, 2.00am. Ace was born, she has a mark like the Ace of Spades on the top of her tail, Marce our friend that some of you met at Crufts named her. Then finally girl number 5 and puppy number 8 arrived at 4.00 am. She was also named by Marce, she has a shape like an elephants ears with the trunk running down her tail, so Nel, after Nellie the Elephant was born.

20150328_06I had thought that Cassie was having a numerically large litter due to her size, it is a large litter but not in numbers of pups,, they are consistently across the board, the strongest, chunkiest litter we have had. The smallest being 448 gm ,almost 1lb with the largest, the second boy being 524gm. I am so delighted, a perfect number which Cassie should cope with easily.

Enjoy the photos and video footage of Day 1 hope they make you smile 🙂

Mad, Mad world !

DSC_0208I have not had a moment to write my blog,so much has happened so here is a brief resume.

Firstly Crufts was brilliant Crumpsbrook Munsters had a great result so many really good placings .What is so rewarding for me is the number of new exhibitors with my babies. I know how much they love their Munsters and to see how thrilled they are showing at the biggest dog show in the world is unbelievable.

My Shepherds have been in the wars ,Ruby and a narrow escape on the yard with the horses. Johnson ,my cob, decided to push Pepper ,Chris’  horse off his hay and poor Ruby was in the middle .How on earth see escaped ith her foot intact is beyond belief .She had sliced some flesh in-between her first two toes and broken a nail . One visit to the vets and a few stitches later she was fine .She has new found respect for the horses now ! Then Ebby had to go to the vets for x-rays when she became lame.Normal rest for a few days did not help and then 4 days of Rimadyl made no impression, in fact she became much worse over night, preferring not to put the foot down at all .Anyway the upshot of this is the vet was amazed at her joints for an 8 year old Shepherd ,so they were not the cause, there was no sign of bone cancer which I was dredding. So the diagnosis was soft tissue injury. She has had a steroid injection in her shoulder and now we wait and see .Fingers crossed she has not ruptured a ligament or tendon because the prognosis for that is poor . She will have 2 weeks restricted exercise and we will see what happens .

The menage is finished now, I hope never to have to shovel sand again !  My back still isn’t the same, but it is so worth it.

I have been on my residential training course to allow me to teach  agility .My friend Jackie came with me ,she will teach at weekends and summer evenings. My aim is to hold classes during weekdays. Mannerly Mutts are holding an open day on Sunday May 3rd with ,Have-a-go agility, various demonstrations including Agility( hoping for a Munster versus Collie match ), Pet obediance, Heel work to music ,and a Gundog demo .I have a companies coming who specialise in raw food , doggie shampoo and herbal treatments, a groomer, and several products like special hand made doggie throws .  Everyone wecome.

Cassie is imminently due to whelp, everything is ready in the maternity wing. She is very uncomfortable now and her temperature dropped this morning Thursday. Keep fingers crossed everyone for a safe arrival of the munchkins . Will obviously update as soon as I can .

Puppies Yeah

Cassie has been scanned this morning . We are delighted to say we saw lots of little “splotts” so Dexter and Cassie will, all being well, be parents in 5 weeks time approximately. The theoretical date is March 3oth, it will fly by as March is my favourite month; Crufts, Cheltenham festival and this year my agility training course. Very exciting!

The doggies are having a brilliant time here as the sand has arrived for our arena and they think it is there for them to play in. The downside is we have sand everywhere. Every morning the doggie beds are full of sand and if they shake there is a sand storm. I think I am going to change my address to Catherton-On-Sea!

Horses are home now too, we have clipped them so they look much smarter than when they arrived home. This was the first year they hadn’t been rugged  and their coats were very woolly, but their skin looks great and they look so well. The downside was the clippers really struggled and we were covered in hair but at least we will not have the moulting hair issue in a couple of months time. I hate that.

I still not convinced my knee will be up to running in the ring with Jas and Fynn( Jas’ brother) so I will stack them and Chris or our friend Pete are going to run them for me if needed.

Have attached photo and video clip of Ruby and Milo playing on the sand

Litter Plans 2015

cassie2We are delighted to say Crumpsbrook Acacia or Cassie as she is known at home has been confirmed in pup to Ellscott Glen Finnan Illa Ghyllbeck , Dexter. Puppies are due last weekend in March all being well ready to go their new families at the end of May. Such a good time to have a new family member, weather should be better and we have more day light. We have already met some lovely people keen to home a Crumpsbrook baby if you are interested do get in touch and arrange a visit to come and meet us all here at Catherton.

I am very happy in my choice of dog for Cassie (you can read my deliberations in my blog) Dexter has a personality which I value highly biddable, affectionate and confident. The working side is to the forefront of his life. Dexter’s conformation is correct and though he is a tall dog he has enough substance, amazing strength of bone and looks totally in proportion. He is 8 years of age and sound which bodes well for the puppies.

This mating will open up my pedigree, giving me greater opportunities in the future as I intend to keep a bitch puppy.

Do please look at Cassies (Crumpsbrook Acacia) own page, for more details and photographs.

If you are interested in going on a waiting list for Cassie’s and Dexter’s puppies please contact us and arrange a visit to come and experience what living with Munsters is all about..

I was thinking on the way home how enjoyable it was running  without any pain, then guess what, I go to work this morning at the paper shop and fall over behind the till, tripping over cables. I fell straight on my knee without breaking the fall. I am now hobbling again, same leg so I’m well practised ! The frozen peas are out again and the ibuprofen, bum !! 🙁   At least it has enabled me to write my blog.

Love is in the air!

Well eventually Jas came into season, her first since her litter last April, followed a couple of days later by Cassie, hurrah!

I took her up to the Hargreaves on Monday 26th for her romantic liaison with Dexter. True to form Cassie played a little coy ! Anyway Dexter was very keen, poor boy has had 2 of his fellow Munsters in season at home so he was very happy to oblige. I am very excited about this mating as it is something different for me, a return to old Ghyllbeck lines  (Holcus), which is way back in Willows pedigree, (Willow is Cassie’s mum) and a German import line (Dixon Ciperro).

I know there are a few families that will be waiting for this news with great anticipation. I usually scan at 28 days or so for a conformation of pregnancy. That is the worst time, those 4 weeks seem to take for ever. Still remember that special things are worth waiting for !

This does mean that Cassie will not be at Crufts this year. Jas will be there hopefully, and a few other representatives of Crumpsbrook Munsters.

If any of you can come to Crufts on Thursday 5th March come and say hello. If you haven’t been before it really is amazing and worth a trip. I will also be there again on the Cambridge Institute of Dog Behaviour and Training stand on Friday 6th, chatting to people about all things doggy. I can’t wait, I love it.

 winter2015-2 winter2015

As far as home is concerned we have largely missed the snow so far 🙁 we had a sprinkling but that was all.  Perhaps there is time yet, I would love to be snowed in for a short while anyway.

Porta cabin has arrived, Chris has been busy repairing various bits of it. Delivery was a little stressful as the lorry got stuck on our surface luckily after he had lifted the cabin off. Our old riding surface had rotted down and was very slippy but Chris had borrowed a friends 4 wheel drive tractor and he managed to tow the lorry off. The riding surface has gone now to our local tree nursery as a mulch for their Conifers. Sand and fibre will be replacing it as soon as weather permits. Perfect for riding and my dog agility plans.

Happy New Year

We have had our usual festivities here at Catherton. Plenty to eat and drink and some lovely walks with the girls. We will be going to Cheltenham races again on New Years day which I really look forward to, its such a lovely way to welcome the New Year in.

patandjaswillow4

Jas’s puppies are growing up and I have managed to see Keiko and Hugo at LKA in December. Kate, bless her, had a good idea to take Lionel and enter Any Variety Gundog Puppy. Sarah and Karen entered to and I went along to see the pups. Lionel I have seen regularly and Keiko a few times but Hugo I hadn’t seen since he left at 8 weeks. They are such quality all of them. Keiko was the little girl I would have kept, so I shall watch with interest. Lionel and Hugo will both be regularly shown as well and my plans are to keep a Dexter and Cassie bitch pup and mate to either of these handsome boys. That of course is a long way in the future, I cannot help myself, thinking ahead. Lots of bridges to cross in the meantime but so exciting.

shownov14hugolionelkeyko2hugolionelkeyko1

Cassie has had her DNA colour test done and can only have black and white puppies, good news and she has now had her eye test updated which is clear again. Now we are waiting for her to come into season. I have entered both her and Jas at Manchester in January and the club show February. Jas to is due in season, she hasn’t had one since her litter in April, but my theory is I would be disappointed if I hadn’t entered and they could have gone. I shall hold out until as late as possible for Crufts entries as that is more expensive.

It is sad that Jas and Dougie’s babies will not be at Crufts due to the lack of qualifying shows at the correct time. They were not old enough at the last Champ show of the season and we do not have another qualifier until WELKS in April, that is obviously for 2016. This means they will miss their puppy and junior classes at Crufts and will hopefully appear as post grads for their first visit. Large Munsterlanders have a 6 month period without Champ Shows with tickets October – April, we have to be placed in the first three at these shows to qualify for the following Crufts. I am sure this has been noted before but perhaps its time to push for a change. Something I will bring up at our Committee meetings.

dogsbytreeThe horses are coming to the end of their holidays, they are so woolly and fat it will be good to have them back. Neither of them did much last summer, I was incapacitated with my new hip and Chris was busy looking after me and the menagerie single handed, then we had the litter of pups and so the summer vanished.

I have exciting plans for my Mannerly Mutts business to for next year. I have 2 modules left to do then I will be qualified to do insurance work on dogs with behavioural issues. I have a porta cabin arriving next week which will be my office and consult room. At the moment owners and dogs come into my conservatory, not ideal as a lot of the dogs are very stressed or unbalanced and that brings its own issues. I am also planning agility classes at home on our riding surface so its all happening.

Whatever 2015 brings for you I hope it is successful and most of all a happy year, see you at the shows.

Revitalised Website and Exciting Times !

crufts14-5This year has gone by so quickly its scary. Crumpsbrook has had an amazing year in the show ring, Cassie has now got 2 tickets. One at Crufts and the second at Leeds. Yes, I would love to get a third, but I am thrilled to have bred a Munster from my first litter that has achieved what she has, to date !

Mandy has had success with her first litter too, Poppy, Oscar and Esther’s daughter, has her first RCC. Moss, Poppy’s brother, has had success too winning lots of puppy classes.

Jas has had a busy year, she had her first litter of 9 puppies earlier in the year. Our friends Kate and Matt own the father Dougie, some of them will be out in the ring next year and they are looking very promising. Jas is looking good again, her coat is back and she will go to Crufts in the Spring, she is such a sweet girl, I am blessed.

Crumpsbrook is going from strength to strength, I am so proud, with the foundation and I always look to the future. With this in mind I have had long pondering’s about my breeding plans. I do have a plan to mate Jas to Dougie again in a year or two, the temperament and working ability, especially Dougie, of these two bodes well for the offspring. The problem I have is the bloodlines. The issue with Munsters is the small gene pool. This, combined with the rigorous health tests, make it tricky to find a suitable boy. I do not want to go abroad, I like to  meet my future stud dogs. I leave that side to others that have the knowledge and contacts abroad , and  foreign health tests are not as rigorous as here, which has caused issues. I prefer to wait and see what the resulting puppies from these matings are like, then consider the offspring. This is exactly what I have done. Those of you that know me may be surprised at my choice initially, not least because the dog is a big boy. I am not keen on dogs that are over breed height standard. My view is the standard is there for a reason and we should attempt to breed  to that standard, particularly with issues that may effect the dogs soundness. Tall is not necessarily good, an analogy I use is my cob Johnson. He is not tall, 15.3 h, but has great depth and bone, he could carry a greater weight all day hunting than a 17.2 thoroughbred for example. With my lines I have the opposite issue, my girls are consistently on the lower height standard and the boys could do with a little more masculinity, so I hope you can see my reasoning. What I like is a square Munster with good depth of chest, strong bone and balanced angulation fore and aft. I realise this is my personal interpretation and that’s why I am passionate about breeding. Its fascinating and exciting.  Pleased to announce results are back of Casssie’s colour DNA test and she is Black Black.

The boy I have chosen is Ellscott Glen Finnan Illa Ghyllbeck or Dexter to his friends. I had been warned by Mandy and Kate he is a big lad but to be honest when I met him I was not put off. He has substance to die for, such good strong bone and when I looked at him from a distance he didn’t look lanky or tall because he is in proportion. My other emphasis is on temperament and he is a joy, so affectionate, level headed and biddable. He didn’t know me from Adam yet coped with my stacking and going over him without any fidgeting. He has a classic melting expression which definitely worked on me. My plan is to keep a bitch pup, its so exciting.

Hope you like the revamped website. Thanks Chris !

Ruby my new Shepherd puppy has her own page now. She is 8 months old now and such a fluff ball, her coat is the richest colour. She is just the most perfect girl I adore her. We often take her into our village and she attracts so much attention because she is so beautiful. She will have her health tests in Spring 2015.

Will keep you posted on Cassie and Dexter.

L.A.P. Life after Puppies

It seems an age now since we had Jas’s litter running around. Life has returned to as normal as it ever is here . Decorating completed, chimney repaired and we have managed a couple of special days out with Pete and Marce. One to Gatcombe horse trials and the other to our local agricultural show, Burwarton. We had lovely food in the shape of a picnic at Gatcombe, which Marce and I are well practised at, a few bottles of bubbles, one “proper job” for Petes’ birthday. Then at Burwarton we take it in turns to produce a breakfast, it was Marces turn this year and she did us proud with a full English, yum. Both of these were much needed after such a busy year so far.

cassieandzennorChris and I had a long trip down to Paignton Show which was made worthwhile by a visit to Liz and Mark’s lovely home in Ipplepen. They are proud owners of Zennor (Cassie’s daughter from her first litter) and made us very welcome.

Jas has recovered from her duties, she and Ruby are loving one another, I think Jas has taken the place as playmate for Ruby since the pups have gone. Her coat is sparce and she is entered into a couple of shows at the tail end of the season , I hope to qualify her for Crufts 2015 ,fingers crossed.

Cassie has been out a couple of times, its good to be out there again ,I can now run ,pain free, around the ring, such a shame Cassie has decided not to oblige !! She has been a right madame refusing to  move in the ring  . She has been pushing for” top dog”at home in our pack, showing dominant tendencies over Ebby ,my Shepherd . Ebby had not been herself for a while  and was allowing Cassie to dominate. Since Ebby was spayed a few months ago her energy levels have returned and she is so much better, this has resulted in her not being such a pushover. I am thinking Cassie had carried her new elevated position over Ebby to Chris and I . Not acceptable, in our household with 5 girls. We have been doing some training with her on a one to one basis to help reinforce our position as leaders. Though I do believe a pecking order has to be in place amongst the girls and they must be allowed to sort this between themselves, Chris and I have to be the ultimate leaders.Obviously the pecking order amongst the girls, will alter as new puppies come in and others get older, but our position has to be consistent.

cassieleedsDuring this phase of Cassie’s life she went to Leeds Championship show and won her Limit class and then went on to win her second C.C. Challenge Certificate , under Julie Derby , I know she has loved Cassie, having awarded her Best Puppy a few years ago. She obviously felt she had enough qualities and had seen enough movement to award her the ticket. I am very grateful to her, though part of me wishes her performance had been better . Two tickets down now, one to go ,who knows if or when, she will achieve her Show Champion title, but I love her conformation and am realistic about her chances.

Ruby my Shepherd pup is 6 months old now, she has developed into a lovely young lady. The longcoat German Shepherd has always been a weakness of mine. Some of you may be aware the coat length is not correct breed standard as it is at the moment . Shepherds have always thrown long coats even in Germany their homeland. It is a recessive gene . The German controlling authorities have never tried to remove this gene ,it is even described in their breed standard , the coat must still have a double layer. Times are changing and they now have classes for longcoats in Germany and the Kennel Club are considering including them too . I shall enter Ruby at LKA and see what happens, apparently some judges are accepting them. Watch this space !

ruby7ruby8

Johnson my cob has had a very lazy summer, I even questioned whether I really missed riding and ought to sell him. Well that idea went as quickly as it came. I have got back in the saddle now and am loving it. He is such a special character, suits me so well , it has been a treat riding again and amazing to be able to get on and go without pain. He ain’t going nowhere!

We will be doing a puppies 2014 page on the website and a page for Ruby in the very near future. Honest !!

7 weeks and Micro-Chips

This will be my last blog for the “Herberts,” this litters collective noun as brilliantly christened by Kate, Dougies mum. The first puppy goes Wednesday, the others at regular intervals over the next week. This is always a sad time for Chris and I, though we are tired, we shall miss them all, they really are special little munchkins. Kate and Matt have managed to visit lots to experience their progress, which I hope has made them feel involved, after all Dougie played an important roll !!

On Monday they went for their microchip and vet check, John who is having Grettal now Elsa sat in the back of Betty my car with the pups. Kate came over and Carol, Otto’s mum came too. The pups were so good, coped well with the journey and as soon as they arrived at the vets attracted lots of interest from other clients and staff. I do find this quite stressful, after all Jas’s and our hard work rearing them it is such a relief for them to be given a clean bill of health. The only pup to create was Chunks, a bruiser of a boy, he was not happy. The other boys and the girls were more interested in the little bicuits the nurses were feeding them to distract them from that huge needle, poor poppet’s.

Ruby my Shepherd pup ,who is now 5 months old, will miss her playmates especially Betty now Kaiko. She has been brilliant with them, that is until Ox ears came on the scene, she then thought they should all belong to her and spent her time pinching them off the pups and telling them off  if they tried to get them back. I took the opportunity to check she was still happy to give them up to me, which she was. She is such a joy, such a wonderful character and as near to an Ebby daughter as I could have hoped for. Ebby has gone from strength to strength since her operation, she looks years younger in her face and is so loving not being “the only Shepherd in the village”.

Jas is putting weight on again, her coat is sparse but I don’t think it will be as bad as Cassie’s when she had her last litter. She is behaving like a puppy herself playing with her babies. Its so good to see her feeling more like her usual self again.

Finally good luck to all “the Herberts” some will appear in the show ring, others are to be trained as gundogs  and agility dogs while some will be loved family pets . Whatever roll they take on I wish them and their new owners every success.

6 WEEKS

The puppies are having busy social lives, lots of visitors, human and canine. The weather has been onside so they have been outside in the garden and down the field lots.

Important decisions are being made at the moment, Kate and Matt are struggling to choose. The pups are such an evenly matched bunch ,well conformed and wonderful charecters. We are all  so pleased with the quality of Dougie and Jas’s babies.

In my last blog I said we were going to attempt a family group photo. Well several attempts later I think we have succeeded. We tried on Thursday which was hopeless puppies running everywhere, then again on Saturday. This time heaven knows why we had much more success. Great Granny Willow, Granny Cassie, Mum Jas ,Dad Dougie and all the pups. Modern technology helped photo-shopping two images together. I am absolutely over the moon. What a sense of pride, 4 generations, a moment I shall treasure.

Final worming is under way and their last nail trimming. All went well, Katie and Sarah provided extra help. Thanks both.

They are such characters, all of them are happy, confident little people. Such fun to be with, having said that the clearing up after them is not so much fun. Chris and I are running around like headless rabbits, but loving every minute. Not much longer now, they will go for their microchips week after next. All their registration documents have arrived, this litter will be my herb litter. Those of you of a similar generation may remember the childrens  T.V.  programme The Herbs, starring  Dill the dog, the very friendly lion called Parsley,  Bayleaf the gardener and a very fat feathery owl called Sage, inspiration for some of the names.

3 weeks

The puppies are receiving visitors now and Jas is more than happy to let other people keep watch over her brood while she enjoys some fresh air.

Yesterday, I had fed her her lunch in the whelping box because she was busy feeding her babies and wouldn’t come out to eat, which she does most of the time now, and I had gone into the kitchen to do my lunch, when  I heard her growl, I thought Ruby my Shepherd pup had wandered in to pinch her food . I rushed in to find Jas trying to eat with lots of little noses pushed into her food. This was the moment I decided it was time to start feeding the Munchkins .They have had Burns puppy food mixed with evaporated milk which they loved .I’m not sure how much went  into their tummies, as a fair percentage was spread all over them and the floor . The next part was not so much fun for them ,they have to have a clean to remove all the food stuck to their coats. I am sure Jas would do as good a job as Chris and I, but it is so good for the puppies socialisation to be handled in this way ,it becomes part of life for them.

I have now returned to work and am trying to catch up with all my wait list of puppy training that has accumulated while I have been off . I had 20 families on my list and they all came to their induction last night, minus dogs I hasten to add. Ruby my Shepherd pup made her first appearence. She was so confident ,not at all phased by the people, she did her little demo of heeling on lead ,sit and down and was a star. Ebby did her crowd pleasing “away” which she loves doing, and recall and off lead heel work.

People are always keen to meet the Munsters , most having never seen one before. The” meet and greet” is something Great Granny Willow excells at she wins everyone over. Jas didn’t go obviously, but Cassie made a guest star appearence as Crufts Champion!  Her coat is thankfully now growing back.

I am really looking forward to Windsor in a couple of weeks. Karen ,who owns Henry is having another puppy to show and she has entered too, she will stay the night here and we will travel down together. This way she gets to see the puppies too.

We have now had Ebby spayed, some of you may remember how poorly she has been on and off over the last year, so it was a tough decision to have this operation .I need not have worried she has bounced back and still allows Ruby to torment her.She is such a wonderful role model.

2 WEEKS TODAY

Pups are changing every day now,all eyes are open and they are trying their best to get to their feet .Its a bit wobbly still ,but they trundle all over the place. Jas looks at them a bit bemused not knowing where to put her feet when she gets in to feed them.

Today they have had their nails clipped and their 2 week weigh in, they will be wormed for the first time this weekend too .They are all gaining weight at a good rate and I have no concerns about any of them.

At the weekend the remaining furniture will be removed from the maternity wing and the plastic will go down, they are already trying to wee on the paper at the front of their whelping box so once they are stronger the front board will be removed, more paper put down in front of the box and they quickly learn to keep their vet bed clean.

We always give them a name for easy identification purposes. Sometimes the reason for their name is obscure, for instance Turner is so called due to him having a solid black head like the sea bird the Turn ! Kitty has a marking on her back which looks like a cat.Hansel and Gretal ‘s markings were so alike and they were a boy and a girl and so on.

The photographs are of them all individually, enjoy!

Day 5

Mother and babies are doing well. Jas adores her babies, she is so gentle with them,I love just watching her nurturing them . She has started coming down the field for a leg stretch and bounds around with the others with a big smile on her face. This time is very useful to clean the whelping box and bedding. The pups go into my electrically heated greenhouse propagator, which has served very well as an incubator. Luckily I had finished with it in my greenhouse .The first photo is of them all in the propagator, they will not fit in there for very much longer, assuming they continue growing at the same terrific rate. The next two are “The 5 Boys” and “The 4 Girls” seperately.

New Arrivals

Thursday morning, the 22nd of May, Jas was not interested in eating her breakfast, so with that and the combination of a drop in her temperature the night before I knew things were immanent . She started contractions and the first munchkin arrived at 12.00 .By 1.00pm we had 4 and she was finished by 6.30. Final tally 9 gorgeous babies, 5 boys 4 girls . All weighing between 415gm and one a whopping 500gm .

Chris and I were both feeling the pressure of anticipation with this litter ,they mean so much to so many people.

Jas has done us proud she is so attentive and loves her babies. I am so relieved by the number of babies 9 is such a sensible number and all so strong and healthy.

The following photos are the first we have taken. More will follow.

A watched kettle never boils !

Jas is hot fat and lumpy poor poppet. She spends all her time lying in our “mud room” on her bed resting her tummy . Chris and I are excited and nervous in equal measure, it’s always a stressful wait these last couple of days , but for whatever reason, this time seems more so .Maybe something to do with how long we have waited for this mating, and God willing the” little splots” will be very special.

In theory they first possible  day is Thursday, but any time  after that, Dougie and Jas mated 3 times over a few days.

Everyone keep positive thoughts coming this way and here’s hoping for a copy book whelping .

As far as Ruby ,my Shepherd pup is concerned, she is growing so quickly, she is so beautiful and she and Ebby are  great buddies , perhaps a little more so on Ruby’s side as she does pester Ebby. She is so good with her though and rarely tells her off . It is so lovely too hear ” Shepherd talk” again it is so individual to the breed and Ruby is learning fast .

I went to the hospital for my check up and the consultant was happy with the xrays so I can now drive again .The only slight downside is I cannot ride for another 2 months, but that is a small price to pay. My friend Pip is happy though as she is really enjoying riding Johnny. My consultant was very insistent that I take things slowly for 3 months as this new hip has to last me a long time. I am only too happy to oblige as being pain free is great. So I will not be showing for a while, but the timing couldn’t have been better as Cassie ‘s coat is only now starting to grow back and I hope to be preoccupied with some babies.
